都是平常经验

It's nothing but ordinary experience

都是平常影像

And ordinary pictures and visions

偶然涌到梦中来

That happen to arrive in a dream

变幻出多少新奇花样

And turn to wondrous forms

都是平常情感

It's nothing but ordinary sentiments

都是平常言语

And ordinary words and sentences

偶然碰着个诗人

That happen to be uttered by a poet

变幻出多少新奇诗句

And turn to wondrous verses

醉过 才知酒浓

Having been drunk

you'll know the powerfulness of wine

爱过 才知情重

Having loved,

you'll know the seriousness of love

你不能做我的诗

You can never write my poems

正如 我不能做你的梦

As I can never dream your dreams

一念

胡适

我笑你绕太阳的地球，

一日夜只打得一个回旋；

我笑你绕地球的月亮，

总不会永远团圆；

我笑你千千万万大大小小的星球，

总跳不出自己的轨道线；

我笑你一秒钟行五十万里的无线电，

总比不上我区区的心头一念！

我这心头一念：

才从竹竿巷，忽到竹竿尖；

忽在赫贞江上，忽在凯约湖边；

我若真个害刻骨的相思，

便一分钟绕遍地球三千万转！

竹竿巷，是我住的巷名。竹竿尖，是吾村后山名。原注

Thought 

Hu Shi

Revolving planets, constrained to circle the sun,

Changing moon, orbiting the earth day and night,

Countless stars great and small, confined in endless rounds through the sky,

Radio wave flashing thousands of miles in an instant – 

I despise you!

You can’t compare with my least thought!

This thought of mine:

From Bamboo Lane to Bamboo Peak

From Cayuga Lake to Hudson’s shore –

If only I don’t get snagged on love

I can spin round the world a million times a second!

A Flash of Thought 

Hu Shi

I laugh at you, the earth going round the sun,

For you can go round but once within a day and night;

I laugh at you, the moon going round the earth,

For you can’t always be full;

I laugh at you, myriads of stars, small or large,

For you can never leave your orbits;

I laugh at you, the radio running thousands of miles in a second,

For you can’t run as fast as a flash of thought on my mind!

The flash of thought on my mind:

Comes at a time to Zhuganxiang, and another to Zhuganjian;

Comes for a moment on Hudson River, and for another by Cayuga Lake;

If I was really deep in lovesickness,

it would go round the earth thirty million times in a minute!

Zhuganxiang is the name of a lane where I used to live; Zhuganjian is the name of the rear mountain of our village. Author’s note
